For those familiar with the national strategy on the importance of RAS they will be aware of bi-partisan recognition that RAS (and its supporting AI) offers opportunities to enhance the capacity of both people and platforms.

The strategy, launched in Jul 2018, examines the contribution RAS makes to areas such as resources, healthcare, infrastructure, the environment, distribution, agriculture, a range of social services and of course Defence.

A common theme is that Australia is a big island with a small population – so is naturally predisposed to needing all the help it can develop from Human-Autonomy Teaming; whether that’s to best enhance our natural resources through to defending our national interests. The national approach to needing autonomous systems reflects that Australia’s geographic responsibilities are both cast and extreme.

This presentation examines the leading role the Navy, DST and industry took in the conduct of the largest activity in this field ever conducted by western allies; the benefits to Australian and Australian based industry; and where next.
